The baby has arrived!

Well after not seeing him since our first chemo session our oncologist finally came back from his six weeks in Europe and we were able to get in to see him on Tuesday. We needed to see if Sofia was doing well enough to be induced this week. Sofia's blood work came back fine and we got the go ahead which is great. We need to keep her down time between chemo treatments as short as possible. If all goes well with recovery we should only be off schedule a week and a half or so.

Unfortunately our OBGYN decided this week was a good time for a vacation even though he mentioned nothing at our last visit when we discussed the 15th as the day we would most likely be ready to have the baby. After an irate phone call to the OBGYN's nurse she found someone who would come to St. Mark's to deliver the baby. The doctors at the practice usually deliver at Jordan Valley but we refuse to go back after our last horrible experience there. So Tuesday afternoon we went to see our new OBGYN and Sofia looked ok to induce for Wednesday.

So yesterday morning we came in to have the baby. We had some initial trouble finding someone competent in the usage of ports. The first nurse stuck Sofia 3 times in the chest and managed to miss the port 3 times. Luckily someone was here for a staff meeting who works in a cancer ward and she was able to come in and insert the needle correctly. They should have let me do it. I kept telling the nurse she was too high, but she kept going back into the same wrong spot. Anyway, that set us back an hour or so but we finally got underway.

Sofia was strep B positive so we had to do the obligatory several hours of antibiotic drip before really starting her on the labor inducing meds. Our doctor wasn't here so some doctor came in around noon and broke her water. We warned everyone that she goes quickly at the end but they never quite listen to us. Doctors are always smarter and know more than you. At least this time our nurses listened and although they had asked our nurse to go and do a C section she stayed with us. Sofia went from dilated to a 7 to us having the baby out in about 10 minutes. Our nurse delivered the baby because they didn't get the on call doctor in fast enough; although, he walked in right after and took care of the baby and Sofia. Our actual substitute doctor showed up about 15 minutes late and so he just said hi and then left.

The baby was 5 pounds 14 ounces and she is 18 inches long. Our littlest but not too bad. Everyone is fine and healthy, Sofia was up and about less than an hour later and we are trying to get out of here today. If all goes according to plan we will be out this afternoon some time. They like to keep the baby for 24 hours when the mom's are strep B positive.

The name is still pending. Sofia is fighting for Tennessee and I am looking for a compromise with Quincee. I am not particularly fond of either but Sofia and I have never liked the same names. Usually I just say ok lets just name the kid and get out of here.

We are scheduled to start up chemo again 3 weeks from Tuesday. That will be the 9 weeks of weekly sessions which has us finishing chemo at the beginning of October. That will be a great milestone to reach. Getting a healthy baby here was one of our biggest concerns and we are very excited to have the birth successfully completed. Thanks everyone, we love you.

Wow! Congrats. I am glad everything went fairly well. It sounds like doctors are the same everywhere. I like the name Erin! teehee.
Hope you both are staying as strong as possible.
